UK TV Audiences Top 17m During England Defeat

England’s defeat at the hands of Romania was watched by a peak audience of 19.3m when the BBC broadcast it on Tuesday night. Unofficial overnight figures put the average total of individuals watching at 17.5m. Of these 8.7m were adult men and 6.7m adult women.

Despite Tuesday’s being the match that decided whether England would make it to the next stage of the Euro 2000 tournament, Romania did not have the same pull as the old enemy, Germany. When that game went out on Saturday night, 17.9m people in Britain tuned in to watch on either BBC 1 or ITV.

This represented a significant increase on the England versus Portugal match, watched by 15.2 individuals on ITV. The male/female ratios of viewers remained fairly similar for both matches, however, with 8.8m men and 6.7m women watching the Germany game and 7.6m men and 5.4m women watching the Portugal fixture.
