NTL Pulls Advertising Of Net Service
Cable giant NTL has pulled advertising of its free internet service after a series of customer complaints. NTLworld was launched ahead of schedule in April (see NTL Launches Free Internet Service Ahead Of Schedule), but demand has been so high for the product that the group has been forced to stop advertising it in order to deal with the backlog of requests.
The ad campaign for the product, which gives free internet access for a monthly fee, promised to sign up the group’s existing telephony and television customers first. The company failed to do this however and began sending out registration software to new customers.
In a statement the group said: “In an effort to deliver NTLworld discs to customers who have already registered for the service, and prevent building up further demand, we have stopped advertising the service in the television, radio and print media.”
The Advertising Standards Authority has told the group that any future advertising must not promise to prioritise existing customers and that clients should be pre-warned of a long wait.
