Slack To Offer Teenage Kicks For The Pre-Loaded Market

Arcwind Publishing launched a new title on 1 April aimed at the relatively untapped market of teenage boys. Slack will cover sports such as BMX, skating and snowboarding as well as features on related interests such as graffitti art, computer games and music reviews. The 84-page monthly title had an initial print run of 35,000 and will retail at £2.75.

Slack is aimed at males aged 15-25. The top end of this age range is currently a fairly saturated market, thanks to the success of Loaded and its followers. However, the younger end is mainly unclaimed territory, with the exception of the similar title X-Sports, which was launched last month by WV Publications. Slack’s publishers have said that while the magazine may be like Loaded in style, there will be no top shelf material.

Magazines such as Lowdown already cover the sports featured in Slack, but while these tend to be smaller, specialist outfits, Slack will be mainstream and according to editor Tim Daly, will deal with “the culture of BMX and skateboarding”. He is keen to emphasise, however, that the magazine is for and by “participators”.
