October ABCs: Financial Times continues to lead daily market
Daily Market
The Financial Times was the only daily national newspaper to increase circulation in October, with a 1.2% period-on-period (PoP) rise taking total sales to almost 192,500.
While the most popular quality title, the Daily Telegraph, was down -0.8% PoP, it was one of just two titles in the entire market to increase circulation over the year – up 1.9%. Similarly, while The Times was down -0.4% PoP it was up 1.6% year-on-year (YoY).
This is in contrast to much heftier yearly declines elsewhere, led by the Daily Mirror which has seen sales slide by more than a fifth over the last 12 months.
The Mirror also recorded the largest PoP decline, down -2.3%.
Sunday Market
A small 0.5% increase added an extra 805 copies to The Observer’s overall circulation in October, while Sunday Express bagged itself an extra 300 after an even smaller 0.1% increase.
Following in the footsteps of its struggling daily counterpart, the Sunday Mirror recorded the greatest PoP and YoY declines, down -3.5% and -24.1%, respectively.
Sunday People also performed poorly over the year (-21.5%), followed by the Sunday Mail (-15.9%).
London Free Press
The London Evening Standard managed to add an extra 14,200 copies to its circulation in October after a 1.6% increase, while circulation for City A.M. and Metro (London) remained fairly flat.
Overall the market was up 0.8% PoP, thanks to the Evening Standard.
