Trinity’s RIM Bid Given More Time
The long-running saga of Regional Independent Media Holdings (RIM) finding a buyer could run for another year after Melanie Johnson, the minister for Competition and Consumer Affairs gave one of the interested bidders, Trinity Mirror, another year to acquire the regional newspaper publisher’s titles.
Johnson said that the one year extension would not raise competition concerns. A year ago three other bids, from Gannett, Johnston Press and Guardian Media Group were cleared by the Competition Commission to approach RIM with offers (see Byers Clears RIM Bid Proposals) but a bid has yet to be taken up. If Trinity Mirror were to make the purchase, it would further strengthen its position as the largest regional newspaper publisher, in terms of circulation, in the UK.
