Davies Announced As New BBC Chairman

Gavyn Davies, chief economist with Goldman Sachs and former Labour party member, has been confirmed as the new chairman of the BBC.

The decision to appoint Davies, who still has strong links with the Labour party, has been heavily criticised by the Conservatives, who have accused the BBC of cronyism.

Conservative party chairman, David Davis, spoke out against the decision and was reported as saying that the appointment amounted to a Government take over of the corporation, given that the BBC’s director general, Greg Dyke, also openly supports Labour.

However, Davies has reportedly agreed to sever his links with the Labour party and put aside his position at Goldman Sachs to concentrate on the task of securing renewal of the BBC charter.

Davies was appointed over David Dimbleby, John Ashworth, Michael Grade and Baroness Jay who were also thought to be in the running.
