Nation Falls Silent
The nation’s airwaves will fall silent at 11 O’clock this morning as TV and radio broadcasters across the country observe three minutes silence as a mark of respect for those who died in Tuesday’s terrorist attack on America.
The BBC is suspending normal services across all of its TV and five radio networks in the UK as well as services across Europe. BBC television will go live to Big Ben at 11am and will broadcast pictures of people observing the event across Europe.
A BBC spokesman said: “Due to the scale of the tragedy of events this week we feel these actions are appropriate. This is a European act of commemoration the scale of which is unprecedented.”
ITV is also suspending normal programming and will broadcast an extended news service. Channel 4 and Channel 5 will acknowledge the silence calling a halt to normal programmes for the three minute duration. Sky TV will also be marking the event.
Many online services will be suspended, with websites posting messages informing users that no content will be added as a mark of respect.
