ITC Decision Creates Competition For ITV News Provision For The First Time

The Independent Television Commission (ITC) has awarded the Channel Three News consortium, which includes BSkyB among its members, nominated news provider status, giving it the go-ahead to compete with ITN to provide news to ITV.

The consortium, which also numbers Bloomberg, CBS News, Chrysalis Group and Ulster Television among its members, announced its intentions last year, and submitted its application last month (see Consortium Launches Bid To Become New ITV News Provider). This is the first time a company other than ITN has applied for this status and created a competition situation for ITV news provision. Each of the companies in the consortium holds a 20% stake.

The ITC has judged the group to be “effectively equipped” and “adequately financed” to provide a high quality national and international news service to ITV, but it will remain the decision of the broadcaster as to which provider it goes with.
