Work of RAB And PPA Recognised In New Year’s Honours

Following a year of debates over regulation and consolidation within the industry, the New Year’s Honours brought gongs for several members of the media community. Two of the CBEs which went the way of the BBC were awarded to Jenny Abramsky, director of BBC radio and music for services to news and radio and to Nicholas Kenyon, controller of BBC Proms, live events and TV classical music for services to music and Millennium broadcasting.

John Makinson, finance director of the Pearson Group, also received a CBE, for services to public sector productivity, while Geoffrey Copeman, vice chairman of Eastern Counties Newspaper Group, was given one for services to the newspaper industry.

An OBE went to Michael Bruce, lately the executive director of the Royal Television Society, for services to broadcasting. Other recipients included Sally Cartwright, publishing director of Hello! magazine, for services to the Periodical Publishing Association (PPA), and Douglas McArthur, chief executive of the Radio Advertisers’ Bureau (RAB) for services to the radio industry.

An MBE was awarded to Elspeth Clarke, personal assistant to the chief executive of Channel 5, for her services to broadcasting.
