ASA Appoints New Industry Expert Board Members

Lord Borrie has appointed two new members to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) council. The appointees are Dianne Thompson, chief executive of Camelot Group and Dan O’Donoghue, head of strategic planning at Publicis Worldwide.

Thompson took up her current role at Camelot in December 2000, have been commercial operations director there since February 1997. Previous roles have included director of marketing at Woolworths and the Signet group.

O’Donoghue has been in his current job at Publicis since 1999. With a total of 17 years at the company under his belt, other positions he has held include vice chairman and joint chief executive. Previous to this he spent ten years in market research at Rowntree Mackintosh.

These are the first board appointments made by Lord Borrie since he was made chairman of the ASA in January this year. Eight of the 12 council members are required to have no advertising interests, while the remaining third are chosen for their knowledge and experience of the business. It is into this latter category that the new appointments have been made.

The new members’ first meeting will be in June 2001. They will replace Hugh Burkitt, chairman of Burkitt DDB advertising agency and Peter Mitchell, a director of Capital Radio, who are leaving after six years on the council.
