Lights Out For Shine Magazine
![]()
Attic Futura has announced that Shine magazine is to close. Publication of the women’s health and beauty glossy, which launched two years ago, will be suspended from August.
According to the publisher, sales of the magazine have proved difficult to sustain in recent months and the decision to fold comes after “disappointing sales in a highly volatile niche market”.
At its peak Shine was selling 120,000 copies per issue, but over the last few months the editorial package has become less attractive to consumers.
Managing Director of Attic Futura, Vivien Cotterill, said: “It is obviously very disappointing to reach this stage with Shine. Its suspension has not been a decision taken lightly, it was and is a critical success, but the magazine is no longer commercially viable. Current newsstand trading conditions have meant that Shine has been unable to meet its business objectives.”
The latest ABC results show that women’s monthlies have seen a year on year decline in readership of 102,053 (see Feature: Has The Consumer Magazine Industry Reached Saturation Point?) and Shine is the latest in a string of women’s monthlies to close. Other titles including Nova and Bare have folded in the last few months.
