January Cinema Admissions Show 9.5% Increase Year On Year

Cinema admissions in January managed a year on year increase of 9.5%, with a total of 11.6m giving an average weekly admission of 2.6m. The top box office hit for the month was Tom Hanks’ Castaway, which has received Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Sound. This brought in £10m over the course of the month.

A variety of other films made up the remaining top five, including kids film 102 Dalmations, mountaineering action movie Vertical Limit and comedy Meet The Parents.

Something of a suprise hit, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon did not make the top five highest grossing films of the month. However, with just over £4m it has overtaken Life is Beautiful to become the highest grossing foreign-language film ever released in the UK.

Debbie Chalet, president of the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) gave a positive outlook on 2001, saying, “We are predicting that 2001 will deliver 148 million cinema admissions, the highest figure for 29 years [and a year on year increase of 4%]. We are confident we will achieve this figure for a variety of reasons, primarily due to the strength and breadth of films due for release this year.”
