Sunday Times Launches Glossy Travel Magazine

Sunday Times Launches Glossy Travel Magazine

The Sunday Times is launching a stand-alone news-stand magazine as an extension of its travel section.

Travel magazine will be a 180-page glossy published by River contract publishing. It will launch in January priced at £2.95 and will be published six times a year.

News International claims that around 2 million people currently read the travel sections of the Times and the Sunday Times and is predicting sales of around 100,000 for Travel, making it the top selling magazine in the sector.

Commenting on the launch, Clive Milner, managing director of Times Newspapers, said: “The growth in long-haul holidays and the boom in European short-breaks has meant that more of our readers are interested in objective and in-depth travel information than ever before. Yet getting access to everything that you need to know in order to decide where, how and when to go can be very complex. This product will meet that need head on.”

Times Newspapers will give significant editorial and marketing support to the magazine and will launch targeted marketing campaigns to reach non readers of the Times and the Sunday Times. Point of sale activity will also be used to stimulate trial and purchase.

It is expected that the magazine will face strong competition from Condé Nast’s long-established Traveller, which currently circulates at just over 37,000.

Last month the Sunday Times became the official newspaper of England Rugby after securing a three-year joint sponsorship deal with the Rugby Football Union. The deal gives the paper exclusive sponsorship rights across the Zurich Premiership and England international matches throughout the season (see Sunday Times To Sponsor England Rugby).
