Eccleston Steps Down From Q To Oversee New Launches

Danny Eccleston is handing over the editorship of Emap’s Q magazine to Kerrang! editor, Paul Rees, as he moves on to oversee a series of new magazine launches.

Eccleston has successfully relaunched Q magazine since he took over as editor in August last year and has also been credited with the title’s biggest unpromoted UK sales for 18 months, despite a 10% year on year decline to 180,168 in the latest ABC results.

In his new role Eccleston will work alongside former Wallpaper* art director, Paul Kurzeja, who joined Emap Performance as group art director last week. The pair will oversee new launch projects into the music magazine market and will work to improve parts of the existing portfolio.

Commenting on Eccleston’s departure, Emap Performance’s MD of rock, Dave Henderson, said: “Danny has done a fantastic job on Q, turning the title around and busting our forecasted sales. We’re very excited about his new idea and have decided to give him the creative muscle to make it happen.”

Rees will take Kerrang! managing editor, Phil Alexander, with him when he moves to Q. The pair have overseen a successful period for Kerrang!, helping it to experience a 60.2% year on year increase in circulation, according to the ABC results for the first half of this year.

Henderson added: “Paul’s contribution to Kerrang!‘s success has been enormous. His enthusiasm and vision for Q is well known and put into practice we’re sure that it will continue the title’s growth.”

The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) recently announced that it is to re-issue figures for 14 of Emap’s consumer magazines following the publisher’s infringement of the complex rules that separate paid-for bulk copies from those that are circulated free (see ABC To Re-Issue Circulation Figures Across Emap Titles).
