Emap Shakes-Up Women and Youth Titles

Emap Shakes-Up Women and Youth Titles

Emap has appointed Carmel Hayes to the role of development director across its women and youth portfolio and has announced that Sarra Manning is to take the role of associate editor across the division.

Hayes, who was new media director, will continue to direct Emap’s online operations, including www.newwoman.co.uk, and is in the process of developing a new online strategy for women and youth. This is widely expected to include an online presence for Emap’s recently launched celebrity magazine, Closer (see Emap Gets Closer To Women’s Market With New Launch).

Sarra Manning, who was previously editor of Hachette and Emap’s joint venture, ELLEgirl, will help produce and develop special projects from concept to launch. Additionally, Manning will provide consulting across the group on priority brands such as The Face and New Woman.

The shake-up follows several high-profile defections from the Emap group to Hachette. Most notably Julie Harris, who stepped down from her position as deputy managing director and group publishing director of the Elle and Top Sante titles to become join general manager of the women’s magazine group at Hachette (see Handbags At Dawn For Emap And Hachette). More recently, Liz Settle, who was marketing manager across the women’s titles at Emap decided to take a similar role at Hachette.

The split has been a wretch for Emap, as several of its journalists and developers worked across its women’s magazines, which included, Red and the Elle titles. It has also left a void in Emap’s portfolio of titles, as Elle is arguably Emap’s only premier women’s fashion brand.
