Wallpaper* Appoints GQ’s Chambers As New Art Director

Highbrow style magazine Wallpaper* has poached GQ’s art director, Tony Chambers, to be its new creative director.
Chambers has been art director at GQ for the past five and a half years and is Wallpaper*’s first high-profile signing since Jeremy Langmead was appointed editor (see Wallpaper* Appoints New Editor In Chief). During his time at Condé Nast, Chambers also worked as a consultant on Italian Glamour and South African and Russian editions of GQ. Prior to joining GQ, he was art director of the Sunday Times magazine.
Mike Soutar, managing director of the Wallpaper* group, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Tony Chambers to IPC and with more senior appointments on the way, this is a hugely exciting time for Wallpaper*.
Jeremy Langmead, editor in chief of Wallpaper*, added: “His ideas for the magazine are fantastic and I can’t wait to see them become a reality.”
Despite its cult status ABC results for the six-month period ending June 2002 revealed a relatively lacklustre performance from Wallpaper* magazine. The title saw a 0.7 year on year drop in circulation to 131,075, down from 131,994 in the corresponding period in 2001.
