New Editor For Esquire
![]()
Nat Mags has announced Simon Tiffin, who is current deputy editor of Harpers & Queen, is to replace Peter Howarth as editor of upmarket men’s monthly Esquire.
Tiffin began his magazine career at rival men’s title GQ, where he worked as chief sub-editor and sports editor before becoming editor in 1998.
Peter Howarth announced earlier this year he was leaving Esquire to pursue other projects as an editorial consultant for Nat Mags.
Duncan Edwards, managing director of Nat Mags, commented: “Simon has been a crucial part of the team that has produced such a wonderful product at Harpers & Queen and it is great to be able to recognise and promote talent in-house.”
ABC results for the first six-months of 2002, show that Esquire, which is part of Natmag’s luxury publishing group Harpers & Queen, saw circulation remain stable year on year at 62,005. However, analysis of ABC data for the last ten years shows that Esquire, like the majority of men’s lifestyle magazines, has seen circulation decline since the late nineties, when the market was at its peak (see below).
Esquire has consciously tried to position itself as a cut above laddish men’s titles. According to Edwards:”The modern Esquire has successfully carved out a distinctive grown-up positioning in the rather juvenile men’s market, with quality journalism at its core. We have the very best product in this market and I know Simon will develop and enhance this unique brand.”
