Kerrang! Announces New Editor
![]()
Emap’s Kerrang! magazine has appointed its youngest ever editor, 26-year-old Ashley Bird.
Bird began his career as a freelancer for rival music title, Melody Maker whilst still a student at Bournemouth University. After graduating, he joined Kerrang! as reviews editor, a post he held for two-and-a-half years before going freelance.
Bird commented on his appointment: “Kerrang! has been integral to my life since I was 14, as an obsessive reader, a writer and a section editor. There isn’t a magazine in the world I would rather be a part of than this one. I’m absolutely chuffed to bits and honoured to be in this position and can’t wait to get stuck in. In many ways I feel like I just married my childhood sweetheart!”
He replaces Paul Rees who recently became editor of Emap stablemate Q magazine. Dave Everley, formerly features editor at Kerrang!, who is promoted to Deputy Editor.
Dave Henderson, managing director of Rock at Emap Performance, added: “Ashley is the absolute real thing in the world of Kerrang!. If he could not be writing and editing it you know he’d be buying it and down at the front at all the Kerrang! gigs.”
ABC circulation figures for the six-month period ending June 2002 painted a rosy picture for Kerrang!, which was the biggest mover amongst music titles with a 60% increase from the same period last year, bringing its total sales to 83,988.
