October Cinema Admissions Hold Level
UK cinema admissions for October totalled 13.4 million and averaged over 3 million admissions a week, according to the latest figures from the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA).
Whilst this represents no change on the same period last year, the January to October 2002 period is up 13% year on year, with a total of 142.5 million visits.
According to the CAA, October’s admissions benefited from the half-term holidays and family film, Lilo and Stitch, topped the monthly box office, taking £10.7 million. Adult action thriller XxX, also performed well, taking £8.3 million in its first two weeks.

The Halloween month also proved a winner for the horror film, Red Dragon, which saw Anthony Hopkins revive the role of Hannibal Lecter. On a more light-hearted note My Big Fat Greek Wedding took a further £7.4 million in October.
Christine Costello, vice president of the CAA, commented: “With nearly 143 million admissions achieved even before the release of several key blockbusters in November and December, the cinema industry is now set to outperform 2001 and deliver record breaking admission levels to our growing number of advertisers. With a healthy awards season film line-up over January-March, we expect to extend this momentum into 2003.”
