Marie Claire Goes Large With Bumper November Issue

November’s issue of IPC’s glossy women’s monthly, Marie Claire, is to be the biggest in the magazine’s 14-year history, with 460 pages.
The bumper edition of the title will be available at newsstands from 4 October with a cover featuring Friends star Courtney Cox. The special celebrity-focused issue, which according to IPC has already generated record ad revenues, will also include interviews with Rachel Griffiths, Sadie Frost and Matthew McFadden.
Commenting on the initiative, IPC’s business director, Helen Farquhar, said: “The fact that this is our biggest ever issue is proof that advertisers are responding well to the refreshed editorial, and the strong growth we are seeing in our copy sales tells us that readers love it too.”
According to ABC results for the first half of 2002, Marie Claire saw circulation increase by 6.4% year on year to 393,748, up from 370,089 in the same period the previous year. However, analysis of ABC results since the magazine’s launch in 1998 reveal that the title has seen circulation decline since the late nineties, with new entrants to the market, such as Condé Nast’s Glamour, taking their toll on the magazine.
Earlier this year, IPC had to increase the print run for the June issue of Marie Claire after the announcement that David Beckham was to be the magazine’s first male cover star, led to an increased demand from retailers (see Cover-Man Beckham Ups Demand For Marie Claire).
