Spectrum Tax Speculation Hits Sky Share Price

Spectrum Tax Speculation Hits Sky Share Price

The value of shares in BSkyB has been weakened today due to press speculation over the weekend that a spectrum tax could be imposed on satellite broadcasting.

The draft Communications Bill published last week (see Draft Communications Bill Relaxes Cross Media Rules) left an open ended position with regard to a possible tax on all parts of the radio spectrum, including satellite services, in order to promote more efficiency in their use.

Until the establishment of new regulator Ofcom, the Radio Communications Agency is in charge of allocating spectrum. It is due to issue a consultation paper later this year which may give further insight into how such a tax would operate.

The value of shares in Sky had dipped below £6.90 by 11am today, from a closing price of £7.14 on Friday.
