TV Market Round-Up – April 2002

Analysis of TV revenue estimates for April shows that, overall, the UK’s terrestrial TV channels experienced a year on year decline of 8%. Channel 5 was the only commercial broadcaster to see revenue increase, rising 9.7% year on year during April to £19.6m. ITV1 suffered the greatest year on year decline, with revenue slipping 11.5% to £138.5m, while GMTV saw revenue drop by 15.2% year on year to £4.75m. April was also a poor month for Satellite channels, which saw revenue decrease by 1% year on year during the month to £41.49m.

Among the ITV franchises, LWT and Yorkshire/North East experienced the most significant losses, with their share of revenue falling by 1.54 and 0.29 percentage points respectively. At the other end of the scale, Meridian saw the largest increase in share, which rose by 1.12 percentage points year on year during April, followed by Central, which saw its share or revenue improve by 0.32 percentage points during the same period.

At 16.03% Central continued to command the largest share of ITV’s revenue during April, followed by Carlton, with a 15.67% share.
