Brits Can’t Survive Christmas Without TV

The British public could not survive Christmas without TV and would rather give up parties and presents than go without their favourite seasonal programmes, according to new research from set-top box manufacturer, Pace.
The study of 1,000 people confirms the extent of the Great British addiction to TV, with 46% of viewers revealing that they could not live without it over the festive period. Only Fools And Horses topped the list of viewers’ all-time favourite Christmas viewing, ahead of the seasonal dose of EastEnders and family favourite Scrooge. The Great Escape also ranked highly, as did festive heart-warmer It’s A Wonderful Life. However, the Queen’s Speech failed to make it into the nation’s top five.

Despite this love affair with TV, the survey revealed that Britons are not satisfied with what’s on offer over Christmas, with over two thirds of respondents wishing for more choice of what to watch over the festive period.
Commenting on the findings, Andrew Wallace, marketing director at Pace Micro Technology, said: “This just goes to show how passionate Brits are about TV and firmly establishes it as a traditional family activity at Christmas time.”
He added: “It also shows many people are not content with the standard Christmas TV offering. With so many quality, free digital channels on offer and digital TV adapters for under £100, the quality and choice available on digital is now an affordable option for families who want to improve their choice of viewing this Christmas.”
The research also showed that the choice of what to watch at Christmas is a common cause of family arguments, with almost a third of respondents citing it was the most common reason for domestic disagreements. British families were found to be more likely to argue about TV than thorny subjects such as money and who would give up their bed for visiting relatives.
