IPC Announces New Addition To ‘Interiors Dream Team’

IPC has announced another appointment to its second largest interiors magazine Homes & Gardens. Giles Kime will join as associate editor, having been tempted away from Condé Nast’s House & Garden to join Isobel McKenzie-Price. McKenzie-Price was appointed earlier this year from IPC’s top homes title Ideal Home where she had previously won Editor of the Year.

IPC says it is building a “dream team” at the title, which has seen a decline in readership recently. McKenzie-Price is said to have a “vision”, however, for “its potential as the flagship of classic British design”. As the latest “dream team” addition, Kime bring experience as the former editor of Telegraph Home, deputy editor of Tatler and features editor of World of Interiors.

McKenzie-Price said of her new recruit: “He has a fantastic instinct for pinpointing the ‘next big thing’ in interiors and delivering it in a way which is original and inspiring, yet real and relevant to readers.”

Despite the continuing popularity of home makeover TV programmes such as Changing Rooms, the interiors magazine market has been sluggish lately, and with many titles seeing year on year falls in circulation, it was only really the entry into the market of paid-for customer magazine Ikea Room (John Brown Publishing) that prevented the whole sector seeing a year on year fall in the July-December figures ABC figures. (see ABC Jul – Dec 2001 Home Interest Magazines)

The furniture store’s title went straight to the top of the market with a circulation of over 300,000, but IPC’s Ideal Home leads the rest of the field, its 240,000+ circulation outstripping the nearest competition, Natmag’s House Beautiful by around 50,000.

IPC is currently sending out confident signals about Homes & Gardens, but the tough regime instigated since the takeover by AOL/Time Warner has already claimed one title- Homes & Ideas (see IPC Closes Six Magazines), so staff are no doubt hoping that the dream team produces the right result.
