BT Brings Consumers Into The Broadband Equation

BT has unveiled its latest initiative to increase broadband uptake in the UK and has launched a scheme that will allow consumers to influence where its ADSL service will be introduced next.

The scheme, which is intended to help BT reach its target of 1 million broadband connections by next summer, will allow consumers and businesses to go online and register their interest in ordering broadband services.

BT is hoping that the initiative will drive broadband uptake in areas where the demand is highest, whilst creating a database that can be used to target marketing drives.

Paul Reynolds, BT Wholesale’s chief executive, said: “Businesses and consumers can register their interest with service providers who will record it on the broadband registration database. The demand and the target levels will be clearly visible to all and will help individuals, communities, local authorities and service providers to have a direct impact on broadband roll out.”

BT chief executive, Ben Verwaayen, added: “We are pushing out broadband wherever we can. This scheme is hugely important in testing demand and making sure we get broadband out there without delay. Everyone who wants to get the benefits of broadband should register. Every vote counts.”

Earlier in the year BT launched a “no frills” high-speed internet product allowing customers to have broadband internet access and telephony via a single phone line from £27 per month (see BT’s ‘No Frills’ Service Ups Broadband Stakes).
