Big Brother We’re Watching You

Channel 4 reports that Big Brother is continuing to bring success in the ratings, according to unofficial figures. For the week from the 10-16 June, the average audience for the shows on Channel 4 was 4.9 million, compared to a 4.3 million average for the week before (see Big Brother Bigger Than Ever For C4 And E4). This represents a 15% year on year increase in average audience size.

Peak viewing during the week was for Monday and Friday night’s shows, which both attracted 5.8 million viewers and a 28% share. The proportion of younger viewers is also up year on year, as Channel 4 reports that it averaged a 45% share among 16-34 year olds last week, compared to 42% for the equivalent period last year.

Channel 4’s non-terrestrial entertainment channel, E4, which shows live coverage during the night and the first showing of Big Brother’s Little Brother, has also benefited from the show’s popularity. Last week the average share for the channel is reported to have been 4.7% among individuals, compared to 3.3% for Sky One. In multichannel homes, the channel is reported to have outstripped Sky One to the tune of 8.5% in share for the week, as well as BBC2 and Channel 5.

This year an even wider range of multimedia has been used to spread the BB message (see Big Brother Set For Blanket Coverage). The average number of page impressions reported on the Big Brother website is 3.5m, up from 3.1m for the same period last year. Last Thursday 4.7m page impressions were recorded, the highest total since Nasty Nick left the Big Brother house in the first series.
