Emap’s Kerrang! Rocks The Airwaves
![]()
Emap’s rock music magazine Kerrang! has launched as a radio station in Birmingham and will transmit on a special restricted service licence throughout July and August.
The station, which launched last weekend, will broadcast classic and contemporary rock from the grounds of Birmingham City Football Club and will feature regular programmes such as Kerrang Klassics, Kerrang Live and Kerrang Punk-o-Rama. Listeners will be able to tune in via the internet at kerrangradio.co.uk and will be encouraged to provide feedback by calling a special hotline.
Paul Rees, editor of Kerrang!, said: “I’m especially pleased that Kerrang! radio is broadcasting in the West Midlands. The area gave birth to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and to my mind has always been the spiritual home of rock music. Its now got the radio station it deserves.”
Emap will hold a series of public meetings to get feedback about the station, which it will use as part of its bid to win the new West Midlands radio licence due to be advertised by the Radio Authority next year.
According to ABC results for the six months ending December 2001, Kerrang!, which was recently redesigned (see Emap Metal Magazine Gets Facelift), saw its circulation increase by 63.% year on year to 76,841, up from 47,004 in the same period the previous year (see ABC Jul – Dec 2001 Music Titles).
