Times Editor Steps Down

Peter Stothard has announced that he is stepping down as editor of The Times after almost ten years.
In a statement made to staff, Stothard described the editorship of the newspaper as “the greatest job in journalism” and said that he wanted to leave when the paper was at a “high point.” Robert Thomson, US editor of the Financial Times, is being tipped to take over from Stothard, however The Times has refused to comment.
Stothard took over as editor in September 1992 and since then the paper has seen circulation rise from 377,995 to 711,295, according to ABC results. Commenting on Stothard’s departure, Rupert Murdoch, said: “Peter’s editorship will be remembered as a great era in the newspaper’s history.”
The Times recently rebranded with the addition of two new broadsheet editions and News International claims that the paper now contains more news, more business and more sport. A TV and radio campaign is currently running to promote the launch of the revamped title.
