Hachette Filipacchi has revealed that its teen title ELLEgirl will be published on a monthly basis from February 2004 in response to demand from readers and advertisers.
The move will see Clare Irvin move from her role as editor of Sugar to become consultant editor of ELLEgirl, which has been published bi-monthly since June when Hachette increased its frequency from a quarterly magazine.
The editorship of Sugar will be taken by former editor of tvhits!, Nick Chalmers, who was responsible for the acclaimed relaunch of the title in Summer 2002, converting it into the UK’s first teen entertainment lifestyle monthly magazine.
Since leaving the title a year ago, Nick has worked on a freelance basis for a range of magazines including Sugar, Inside Soap and Mizz. He takes over as acting editor of Sugar from 24 November.
Commenting on the initiative, Lysanne Currie, editorial director of Hachette’s teen group, said: “The launch of ELLEgirl as a monthly title is a major move in our company’s strategic growth plan for the year ahead. By employing Claire’s strengths and skills under my directorship we are demonstrating our commitment to a move we believe will be a major marketplace success.”
Irvin added: “Working on Sugar for nearly two years has been tremendous but I was keen for new challenges and working with Lysanne on ELLEgirl at this exciting juncture was too good an opportunity to turn down. We will be aiming for the top with ELLEgirl which has built a loyal and increasing younger readership around traditional ELLE values.”
Hachette recently appointed Tim Kirkman, previously head of press at Carat, as its new sales director with responsibility for advertising sales across Hachette’s magazine portfolio which includes Elle, Red and Sugar (see Hachette Appoints Kirkman As Sales Director).
