Virgin Radio Appoints Former Capital Marketing Chief

Virgin Radio has appointed former Capital Radio marketing director, David Andrews, to head up its marketing team, as it increases its efforts to attract new listeners in the face of growing competition.

The newly created role will see Andrews take on responsibility for the strategic direction of Virgin Radio’s marketing. He will also oversee the planning and execution of specific marketing and advertising campaigns for the station.

Andrews will report directly to programme controller Paul Jackson, who said: “The creation of this role signals our intention to have a more strategic approach to our marketing. After a number of on air changes we now have a quality product and David will make a significant difference in communicating this to our audience.”

Andrews added: “I am very excited to be joining a radio station on the up. Virgin Radio now needs to communicate regularly and consistently with its public and I look forward to driving that.”

After stepping down as Capital Radio’s marketing director, Andrews developed a partnership role with Talisman Marketing, which provides a variety of marketing services to clients across the UK including Virgin Radio.

The latest RAJAR results for the second quarter of 2003 show that Virgin Radio AM has seen its weekly reach decline by 13.3% year on year to just below 2.2 million. However, the group is reportedly attempting to boost its image among music fans by signing a virtual unknown to present a weekday show dedicated to breakthrough bands and cutting-edge music.

The group recently made an other addition to its marketing team with the appointment of Louise Reeves as head of sponsorship. Reeves joined Virgin Radio three years ago and has a range of experience throughout the station’s sales department, including a stint as senior sales executive in new media and promotions (see Virgin Radio Appoints New Head Of Sponsorship).
