Emap Hots Up With Launch Of Heat Radio On Freeview

Emap is launching its celebrity entertainment magazine, Heat, as a national music radio station on Freeview at the end of this month.

Heat Radio, which is the first of Emap’s non-music titles to launch on the platform, will reflect the magazine’s irreverent take on the celebrity scene and the music policy will feature tracks from the eighties to the present day.

The launch follows the runaway success of the weekly magazine, which saw circulation increase by 18.1% year on year in the latest ABC results, as readers continue go in search of the latest gossip on the lives of their favourite celebrities.

Paul Keenan, chief executive of Emap Consumer Media, said: “When it comes to entertainment Heat readers are smart, savvy, discerning and quick to seek out hot new stuff – Heat Radio will quickly build a great audience.”

Emap has focused heavily on developing its digital radio stations this year and its portfolio already includes Kiss, Kerrang!, Smash Hits, Q, Magic, The Hits and Mojo, which will also launch later this month (see Emap Rolls Out Mojo Radio On Freeview Platform).

The success of the stations has been partially attributed to Emap’s ability to cross promote the new launches across its television, radio and magazine properties.

The latest RAJAR audience figures show that digital radio helped Kiss to increase its weekly reach to 2.57 million listeners across the country in the three months to June 2003. Emap’s Smash Hits digital attracted 853,000 listeners during the same period and Kerrang! had 773,000.

Listening figures for Q, Magic and The Hits will be revealed in November with the RAJAR figures for the three months to September.

Earlier this month Emap secured a multi-platform deal with Clear Channel Entertainment to promote Linkin Park’s forthcoming UK tour. The deal is the first of its kind between Emap and a tour promoter and includes a range of activity on Kerrang! brand properties (see Emap Seals Multi-Platform Ad Deal With Clear Channel).
