Five Moves To Boost Science And History Programming
![]()
Five is continuing to reposition itself as a more upmarket channel and has moved to strengthen its science and history programming with two senior appointments.
The move sees the fledgling terrestrial broadcaster bolster its factual department with the appointment of separate heads of science and history, as part of an ongoing attempt to distance itself from its once tawdry image.
Justine Kershaw has been promoted to controller of science and Alex Sutherland has been named controller of history. The pair, who were both previously deputy controllers of factual, will report directly to Dan Chambers, who has been promoted to director of programmes.
Chambers said: “Justine has a proven record with science programmes. I’m sure her unique ability will further strengthen this very important part of our output. Alex has a strong journalistic background. She has had a fantastic year with a great slate of shows and she will be a huge asset to the team.”
Five has seen its share of viewing increase steadily since its launch in 1997, when it was established as the home of films, fornication and football. However, the channel has been gradually moving upmarket and recently dropped all remaining softcore pornographic content from its schedules.
Prior to announcing his decision to return to Channel 4, Five’s programming director, Kevin Lygo, worked to reposition Five as the home of classic US dramas and arts documentaries by reducing the channel’s reliance on erotic drama and low budget films (see Lygo Strips Channel Five Of All Adult Content).
