Observer Launches New Monthly Music Title

The Observer has boosted its magazine offering with a new monthly music publication entitled The Observer Music Monthly.
The new title, which compliments the existing Observer Sport and Observer Food Monthly magazines, will launch later this month with the backing of a heavyweight ad campaign and marketing activity to support each individual issue.
The magazine will be edited by Casper Llewellyn Smith, who joins the Observer from the Daily Telegraph, where he was assistant editor of the Telegraph Magazine. Prior to this he was the editor of the paper’s Saturday Arts & Books supplement.
Commenting on the launch, Llewellyn Smith said: “The magazine will provide a great opportunity to review the way music is covered in the print media, Most newspaper coverage of the pop scene is terribly bland, and the specialist publications cater for very small readerships. I believe that people have broader tastes than that and this is something we will be taking into consideration.”
Marc Sands, marketing director of Guardian Newspapers, added: “Following on from the outstanding success of both Observer Sport and Observer Food Monthly we are confident that the music magazine will attract a significant number of new readers to the Observer.”
Last month the Observer teamed up with Oddbins to launch an exclusive deal to advertise its Food Monthly magazine on wine wraps in off-licences across the country (see Food Monthly Hits The Bottle In Oddbins Stores).
The latest ABC results for the six months ending May 2002 show that the Observer saw its circulation increase by 1% year on year to 456,269, up from 451,838 in the same period in 2002.
