Maiden Awarded £1.8m Railway Advertising Contract

Maiden Outdoor has secured the £1.8 million contract to sell advertising at all First Group railway stations, following a competitive pitch against a range of outdoor contractors.

The three-year rail contract, which is the first to be renewed since privatisation in 1998, gives Maiden the exclusive outdoor advertising rights to 500 panels at 12 mainline stations across the country.

Maiden plans to sell some of the panels individually, but most will form part of the group’s national AdRail product, which was re-launched last year (see Maiden Outdoor Unveils New AdRail Packages).

Commenting on the win, Roger Fernley, managing director for rail franchises, said: “First Group recognises the significant increases in advertising revenues made by Maiden over the last five years. That established track record was a key factor in winning this contract.”

Maiden recently released its full year financial results showing a pre-tax loss of £1.1 million during 2002. This prompted the group’s chief executive, Ron Zeghibe, to say that he remains cautious about prospects for the rest of the coming year (see Maiden Expands Transvision Network But Profits Dip).

The latest figures from the Advertising Association show that the outdoor industry performed well during 2002, with expenditure increasing by 1.9% year on year during 2002 to £690 million (see Outdoor Growth Boosts UK Adspend During 2002).
