Kevin Beatty, managing director of Northcliffe Newspapers, will be the next chairman of the Newspaper Society’s marketing committee.
His chairmanship will take effect from 1 July, when the current chairman, Jim Brown of Newsquest Media Group, steps down.
The Marketing Committee is responsible for the Newspaper Society’s marketing and communications work in the advertising, newspaper sales, readership, events and research areas.
Beatty took up his position at Northcliffe Newspapers in September 2001. He has a strong background in the regional press and previously led Associated Newspapers’ new media operations in London. He was previously managing director of the Evening Standard and Metro and is a former managing director of the Mail on Sunday, Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail.
Prior to joining Associated Newspapers Beatty worked in circulation, marketing and management at the Belfast Telegraph, the Teesside Evening Gazette and the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal.
Earlier this year, the Newspaper Society criticised the Government’s plans to overhaul the regional and local newspaper industry and has called for a series of amendments to the Communications Bill (see Newspaper Society Attacks Government Over Regional Plans).
