Mojo Editor Departs After Five Years

Pat Gilbert, editor of Emap’s urban music magazine, Mojo, is stepping down after five years at the title.
Gilbert, who has been editor since 2001, helped the title to see a solid increase in circulation in the latest ABC results (see ABC Jul-Dec 2002: Music Sector Hit By Decline Of Dance). However, he is leaving to spend more time with his wife and child. Mojo‘s editor in chief, Paul Trynka, will edit the magazine while a permanent replacement is found.
Commenting on his departure, Gilbert said: “Mojo has been my life over the last five years and the idea that I’m leaving brings a huge lump to my throat. However, as George Harrison said, all things pass.”
Trynka added: “I’m very sad that Gilbert leaving to go freelance. Apart from presiding over several consecutive ABC rises as editor, he’s overseen many crucial changes to Mojo over the last five years, and we will all miss his great writing, good judgement, and sheer hard work.”
According to ABC results for the six months ending December 2002, Mojo has seen its circulation increase by 3.7% year on year to 100,418, up from 96,837 in the same period in 2001.
Analysis over a longer period reveals that Mojo has enjoyed a period of sustained growth over the last eight years. Despite the fickle nature of the music magazine sector, the title has managed to double its circulation since its launch at the end of 1993 (see below).
