Seasonal Dip Hits June’s Cinema Admissions

A number of high profile sequels could not prevent June’s cinema admissions from dropping to 9.4 million, down from 12.2 million in the same period the previous year, according to the latest figures from the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA).

The data shows that June’s cinema admissions averaged just 2.19 million a week as consumers turned their backs on the summer blockbusters and attempted to make the most out of the British sunshine.

Big budget Hollywood sequels dominated the chart in June and the Matrix Reloaded continued to cast its shadow over the box office, taking £10.5 million during the month. High octane sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious also performed strongly, taking £5.2 million at the box office to put it in fourth place.

Meanwhile, slapstick prequel Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd drew £1.6 million at the box office in June and the X-Men 2 also hung in the chart, taking a further £1.1 million during the month.

The big screen comedy Bruce Almighty also experienced summer success and took £5.03 million in what was the third highest opening weekend of the year. The film, which stars Jim Carrey, took a total of £8.2 million at the box office in June.

Despite the seasonal dip in cinema admissions in May and June, Debbie Chalet, president of the CAA, is positive the summer will prove successful. She said: “It will be an action packed summer with Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, The Hulk, Terminator 3 and the remake of the Italian Job.”

She added: “2003 will also finish well with Finding Nemo, which has broken box office records in the US, the third Matrix film and the final Lord Of The Rings film (see Matrix Fails To Reload Cinema Admissions In May).”
