Visitors to London’s Transport Museum will soon be able to step back through the ages of advertising on the capital’s transport networks, as Viacom Outdoor prepares to sponsor the museum’s new art gallery in Covent Garden.
The £180,000 sponsorship forms part of a major re-development of the London Transport Museum beginning next year. The new art gallery will be much larger, enabling more members of the public to access the museum’s world-renowned collection of transport poster art.
The new display will underline the massive use of poster advertising by London Underground and London Transport, both responsible for more creative use of the medium for communication and publicity than any other organisation in the world.
The decision to sponsor the exhibition, comprising more than 5000 posters produced over the last hundred years, was taken by Viacom in order to highlight the advertising opportunities available through its dealings with London Underground, the DLR, national rail and the UK’s buses and trams.
Commenting on the sponsorship Andrew Oldham, joint managing director at Viacom Outdoor said: “As the advertising sales contractor for the London Underground and for London’s buses, Viacom Outdoor is proud to be associated with this splendid collection. We look forward to supporting the great work of London’s Transport Museum in promoting public enjoyment of this and other creative work.”
Amongst the art on display will be work by well known artists such as Man Ray, Edward McKnight Kauffer and Laura Knight from the pre-war period and David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin and John Bellany from more recent years.
Viacom Outdoor has increased its portfolio of transport properties in recent months, in particular scooping several major rail contracts from rival contractor, Maiden. Last month saw the company double its national rail advertising business with a £9 million contract with First Rail (see Viacom Doubles Rail Business With First Group Win).
