Capital Appoints New Head Of Commercial Marketing

Capital Radio Group has appointed Marian Peppers as its new head of commercial marketing, in a move that is expected to complete the long-running restructure of its sales operations.
Peppers, formerly sponsorship director at Universal Studios Network, will assume responsibility for driving the strategic business marketing of the radio group’s brands across the commercial division.
From 9 February she will also work to strengthen the position of Capital’s portfolio of stations and will be charged with ensuring that commercial marketing plans are kept in-line with sales team focus and development.
Her other responsibilities include overseeing PR and events, as well as working across the consumer marketing and programming departments to maximise understanding of the commercial division’s opportunities.
Peppers will report directly to recently appointed commercial marketing director, Gavin Miller, who said: “Marian will be a great asset in helping shape, drive and deliver an effective sales and marketing strategy in line with the vision of the commercial division.”
Miller, a former Starcom group account director, took over as Capital’s head of commercial marketing last August, filling the position vacated by Linda Grant when she took control of national advertising sales earlier that year (see Capital Appoints New Head Of Commercial Marketing).
Grant initiated a restructure of Capital Radio’s commercial division in an attempt to provide greater customer focus and more emphasis on selling the group’s portfolio of brands. The move has seen the formation of two separate group and brand sales divisions, which will be supported by a third commercial marketing strand (see Capital Unveils Newly Restructured Commercial Division).
The latest ABC results for the three months to September 2003 brought less than impressive news to Capital’s flagship 95.8 FM station, which saw its weekly reach decline by 13.9% year on year decline to just below 2.3 million. It was also knocked off the top spot in London by its oldest and fiercest rival, Heart 106.2, which became the capital’s most listened to commercial radio service in terms of share of listening (see RAJAR Results Q3 2003: Heart Challenges Capital For Top Spot).
