IPC To Take On Sneak With Teen Version Of Now

IPC will this week take on Emap’s Sneak in the increasingly competitive teenage magazine market with the launch of TeenNow, a spin-off of its highly successful celebrity magazine Now.

The new younger version of Now will initially launch as a one-off before being rolled out as a weekly celebrity magazine for older teenage girls interested in the latest gossip on the rich and famous.

The 92-page title will be priced at £1.50 and will be edited by Now’s deputy editor, Jeremy Mark, who said: “There hasn’t been a magazine on the market that gives teenagers their weekly fill of celebrity news and gossip in a language and style that they appreciate, until now.”

The first issue of TeenNow will feature an exclusive interview with teen heart-throbs Busted, MTV presenter Dave Berry spills the beans on how he picked up Sugababe Heidi Range and EastEnders stars, Joe Swash and Pooja Shah, pose for a glamorous photo shoot. Readers can also expect to find posters of Brit winners, The Darkness, US rap star 50 Cent, Orlando Bloom and Justin Timberlake.

Teenage lifestyle magazines have had a rough ride recently and the latest ABC results for the six months to December 2003 show that Hachette Filipacchi’s market leading Sugar saw circulation decline by 9.2% year on year to 291,794. Increasing competition in the sector also recently forced Emap to announce the closure of J-17 following a 6% year on year decline in circulation to 134,650, down from 143,308 in the same period the previous year (see Emap Confirms J-17 To Close And Face Suspended).

However, Emap’s teen gossip magazine, Sneak, continues to gain ground with an impressive 20.4% year on year increase in circulation to 104,174. The title for 13 to 19 year-olds has proved there is a sizable gap in the market for celebrity news and gossip (see Emap Sneaks Back Into Phone Booths With Advertising Push).
