ITV has announced that as part of the celebrations for its 50th anniversary, the broadcaster will be collaborating with the IPA to commemorate the success of its advertising customers by presenting 50 years of Fame.
The celebration will highlight 50 of the most famous brands of the last half century, with 300 leading figures from the marketing and advertising community attending the event at The Old Trueman Brewery in Brick Lane on the 19th of September.
The event will reflect on television advertising that has been an important part of each brands success, with a “Private View” written by a leading industry figure for each of the brands.
Commenting on the spectacle, Justin Sampson, director of CRM at ITV Sales said: “We wanted to find a way of thanking our customers for their investment in ITV over the years and to celebrate their success. We’re delighted that so many leading industry figures have played a part, either by writing Private Views or contributing other content to the special supplements.”
Hamish Pringle, director general of the IPA added: “The advent of commercial television in 1955 added a powerful new communications tool to advertisers’ armoury. It seems very appropriate that we should be celebrating this momentous anniversary by focusing on how great brands have been built and maintained with the support of television advertising.”
Industry magazines, Campaign and Marketing will be publishing commemorative supplements as part of the 50 Years Of Fame.
The broadcaster will also mark the occasion with a variety of one-off programmes and live events, designed to entertain and involve viewers across the country.
The first of the celebratory programmes was aired in June, with Melvyn Bragg’s documentary, The Story of ITV: The People’s Channel. The focus of the on-air celebrations will now be concentrated around the anniversary itself in mid-September and will include 49 Up, revisiting the lives of children filmed by World in Action in 1964. As ITV celebrates its 50th anniversary, the programme catches up with the group as they approach their half-century mark (see ITV To Celebrate 50th Anniversary This Year).
Elsewhere, the broadcaster will screen Avenue Of The Stars, honouring British stars past and present with a new walkway along the River Thames in a permanent tribute to the entertainment world. ITV’s 50 Greatest Shows will also celebrate the broadcaster’s history of entertaining the nation, counting down its best-loved programmes, as voted for by the public, in a three-hour celebration show.
