IAB Appoints New Chief Executive To Replace Meadows-Klue

The Interactive Advertising Bureau has announced the appointment of its new chief executive, selecting former head of advertising at Vodafone, Guy Phillipson, to be Danny Meadows-Klue’s successor at the industry body.

Phillipson has been head of advertising at Vodafone since July 1999, with his responsibilities including annual brand, consumer, business, new media and sponsorship expenditure of £60 million. Throughout his career he has acquired a reputation as a highly innovative marketer and has worked on both the agency and client side of the business.

Commenting on his high profile appointment, Phillipson said: “I’m delighted to be taking over the helm of the IAB at such an important time in the development of the medium. As a major advertiser, I know the Internet as a formidable sales machine, but it’s also a great medium to build brands using engaging, interactive creative work.”

Meadows-Klue will be a tough act to follow, credited with both building the IAB into its current state, and delivering revenue growth. The trade body chief is also held responsible for the majority of IAB projects across its standards, training, research and marketing programmes.

However, Richard Eyre, chairman of the IAB, added: “Guy is perfect for this job. He understands the instincts, concerns and ambitions of our customers and will bring his proven vision and charisma to enhance the IAB’s return on investment for members.”

Commenting on his decision to resign in November, Meadows-Klue told NewsLine: “The reason why I can do this now is that we’ve got there. We’ve completed all of the things that I set out to do. We’ve built up a great team and a truly amazing amount of work.”

The outgoing CEO said that his role with the IAB had prohibited him from working too closely with some areas of the industry, a situation which could now be addressed (see Meadows-Klue To Step Down As IAB Chief Executive). He said: “The industry has expanded enormously over the past few years and I’m looking forward to being able to take on quite a hands on role with some of the companies, and it would be a conflict of interest if I were to do that while I were chief executive.”

Phillipson will take up his new role with the IAB on the 11th January.
