Microsoft is to enable users of its Xbox 360 games console in the US to download films and TV shows to buy or rent, after signing deals with several TV and movie companies.
The software giant has done deals with CBS, Warner Bros Home Entertainment, MTV networks and Paramount Pictures for TV and movie downloads on its Xbox Live service.
The content will be available from November 22, with Microsoft saying that over 1,000 hours of content will be available by the end of the year.
Although TV shows will be for purchase, customers will only be able to rent movies on the download service.
Users renting movies will have 14 days to begin watching a film and 24 hours in which to finish watching once they have started.
TV shows that are available for purchase can be stored on the console’s hard drive or remotely for viewing at the user’s discretion.
As yet it is uncertain when the download service will be launched in the UK.
