Love Island Resurgent Without Big Brother To Bother It

Love Island Love Island last night recorded its highest adult viewing figures since the opening show, with a peak of 2.9 million adults (a 15% audience share) tuning in to the first episode of the evening.

An average of 2.8 million adult viewers watched the first instalment of the night, on ITV1 at 10pm, while the second show, at 11pm, attracted a peak of 2 million (a 20% audience share) and an average of 1.9 million adults across its half hour timeslot.

Viewing figures may pick up even more now that fighting has broken out on the island, as Strictly Come Dancing hunk Brendan Cole punched Lee Otway six times, leaving the ex-Hollyoaks star with a bleeding ear.

The biggest winners of the night though were the soaps, with Coronation Street, at 7.30pm, bringing in the most viewers with its mixture of northern bonhomie and pathos.

It attracted a peak figure of 9.3 million adults (a 51.5% audience share), while its average across the whole half hour was only slightly down on that, at 9 million adult viewers.

The second edition of Coronation Street, which aired at 8.30pm, was the second best performing show of the night, attracting a peak of 8.9 million adults (a 43.4% audience share).

Just behind Coronation Street was Eastenders, attracting a peak figure of 8.5 million adult viewers (a 42.8% audience share).

In addition, Emmerdale also performed well, bringing in a peak of 7.6 million adult viewers (a 46% audience share).

The only non-soap to come anywhere close to those figures was the BBC1 drama Silent Witness, with a peak of 5.9 million adults (a 29% audience share).
