8.4 Million Watch Bore Draw On BBC1

A Ukraine Player Last night’s eight o’clock match between Ukraine and Switzerland drew millions of viewers to BBC1, even though it might well have been the dullest match of the tournament so far.

A peak adult audience of 8.4 million adults watched the Swiss and Ukrainians attempting to edge their way to a quarter final match against Italy. An average of 6.6 million adults (a 32% audience share) watched the two teams engage in a night-long stalemate, which was only broken when Ukraine won on penalties. A peak of 2.6 million ABC1 Men watched the match, a 54% audience share, with an average of 1.9 million tuning in to see who would triumph.

The other big performer on the night was Coronation Street on ITV1, which brought in a peak of 8.5 million adults and averaged 8 million (a 44% audience share).

The other big footy match was between Italy and Australia on ITV1. The Socceroos fought valiantly but were no match for the Latin wiles shown by the Italians, who drew on all their experience to gain a 1-0 win. A peak of 6.2 million adults watched the match, with an average of 3.6 million (a 37% audience share). An average of 959,000 ABC1 Men (a 55% audience share) saw the match, a figure that peaked at 1.8 million right at the end of the game.

Big Brother also did well last night, with a peak figure of 4.3 million adults. The show averaged 4 million adult viewers (an 18% audience share), who no doubt wanted to see what dastardly scheme to torment the housemates the producers would think up next.

A peak of 1.4 million adults watched the Wimbledon wash-out on BBC1, with an average of 926,000 (a 10% audience share) desperately hoping that the rain would stop.
