Top Up TV No More

Top Up TV Logo Top Up TV, the independent company set up to offer Freeview customers the chance to ‘top up’ their channels for a small monthly payment, has gone into voluntary liquidation.

The south west London based company, which was founded in 2003, has placed itself into voluntary liquidation after undergoing a corporate restructuring and name change to Minds 1.

The registering of the Minds 1 name is believed to be a way to avoid losing the Top Up TV brand name when the company placed itself in liquidation.

Chairman David Chance has reportedly said Top Up will “de-merge” into three new companies called Top Up TV 1, Top Up TV 2 and Top Up TV 3. The move comes after advice from the City that the diverse business should be divided.

Top Up includes a subscription service that allows Freeview customers to pay £7.99 a month for 11 channels, a TVX adult TV subscription service, a pay-per-view Scottish Premiership offering (see Top Up TV Brings Setanta To Scottish Freeview Homes) and an MHEG technology business. Top Up may also be part of Setanta’s plans for Premiership football from next year (see Sky And Setanta Share Remaining Premiership Rights).

Five took a stake in the company late last year (see Five Joins Forces With Top Up TV) but it is believed that the deal with the broadcaster will not be affected.
