The England v Trinidad and Tobago match on ITV1 last night drew in a massive 14.5 million adult viewers (a 75% audience share) and averaged 9.9 million adults throughout the match (66% of all adult viewers).
England’s hard fought win was easily the night’s big winner, with an hour long Eastenders the only other programme coming close as it managed an average of 6.2 million adult viewers (a 35% audience share) in its 7.30 time slot. Perhaps viewers were celebrating England’s safe passage through to the next round by watching the exciting goings on at The Queen Vic
The majority of ABC1 Men were, unsurprisingly, watching England, with a peak audience share of 88% (3.9 million viewers) that averaged out to 80% (2.6 million) across the whole of ITV1’s coverage.
In the earlier match on ITV1, an average of 1.6 million (27.3%) adult viewers watched Ecuador, who could be England’s opponents in the next round, defeat Costa Rica 3-0 and in the eight o’clock kick-off, 5.9 million adult viewers (30.7%) saw Sweden triumph over Paraguay 1-0, with a late goal from Arsenal’s Freddie Ljungberg.
ABC1 Men must have been pretty happy with ITV’s coverage of the three games yesterday, with 430,000 (46%) of them watching the Ecuador match and 1.7 million (43%) waiting to see who would emerge victorious from the other Group B contest.
