The Sportsman has apparently been attracting interest from potential buyers and could soon come out of administration, according to reports in the trade press.
The reports claim that Dermot Desmond, owner of London City Airport and Celtic FC’s largest shareholder, may be interested in acquiring the title.
The sports betting paper, which launched just four months ago, has been in administration since last week (see The Sportsman Goes Into Administration).
The Guardian recently reported that UHY Hacker Young, the administrators appointed to resuscitate the ailing paper, had criticised its management, calling them naive for announcing a 40,000 copy a day circulation target. Andrew Andronikou, of UHY Hacker Young, is quoted as saying: “Forty thousand is a very ambitious figure – what they have achieved so far has been good for its first year and they need to build on that.”
The paper’s publishers have stressed that it will continue to be produced throughout the period of administration.
