ABC Results Jul-Dec 2005:Women’s Monthlies Market Remains Volatile
Women’s monthlies saw a volatile last six months of 2005, with the latest set of ABC figures for July to December, seeing more declines than rises in circulation, indicating the continued competitiveness in the sector.
Once again, Conde Nast’s Glamour held on to its crown as the magazine of choice, with the pocket sized publication achieving a circulation of 585,984, despite a dip of 5.5% year on year.
Good Housekeeping pushed its circulation up by 7.7% year on year, with the Natmags magazine seeing the largest gain in the latest round of ABCs and enjoying a circulation of 468,579.
IPC Media received good and bad news in the ABCs, with Family Circle suffering the largest decline, dropping by 19.7% year on year. The family orientated magazine now commands a circulation of 112,597.
Elsewhere IPC saw Marie Claire and Essentials both suffer dips of 3.4% year on year and 7.8%, respectively. The publisher regained face, with In Style pushing its circulation up by 3.1% year on year, and Women and Home grasping an extra 1% in circulation during the July to December period.
Conde Nast saw success across its other offerings in the women’s monthlies market, with Tatler, Vanity Fair and Vogue all enjoying a healthy boost in circulation.
Conde Nast’s Easy Living continued on from its good performance in the last set of ABC’s gaining an extra 11,000 from its January to June total of 171,038, taking its circulation up to 182,146.
Tatler rose by 2.5% year on year, with Vanity Fair gaining an extra 3.2% in circulation in the same time period. Vogue pushed its circulation up by 3.6% year on year, with the publication now commanding a circulation of 214,348.
Emap suffered in the women’s monthly market, with both its titles losing circulation year on year. New Woman saw the largest actual decrease in circulation, year on year losing 49,382 in circulation, down 17.6%. The magazine now has a circulation of 231,066. Yours dipped by 4% year on year.
Beyond Good Housekeeping, Natmags saw a mixed bag of results in the ABCs, with Company, Cosmopolitan and Zest all dipping year on year, by 14.8%, 3.5% and 12%, respectively.
Elsewhere, the publisher enjoyed success with Harpers & Queen pushing its total up by 4.9% year on year and Prima following the upward trend, gaining 4.5% in its circulation. The magazines now command circulations of 102,863 and 331,715, respectively.
Hachette Filipacchi saw overall success, with Elle and Red seeing year on year increases of 3% and 4.6% respectively, while B slipped by 9.4% year on year. The publication now commands a circulation of 150,536.
German publisher, H Bauer saw Spirit & Destiny dip by 0.8% year on year, while Essential Publishing’s Real also dropped, losing 7.1% year on year in circulation.
