EC Warns UK Over TV Controls

The European Commission has written to the UK government giving it two months to comply with the EC’s “television without frontiers” directive, or face court action.

The Commission believes that Britain is imposing too many controls on foreign satellite and cable broadcasts into the UK. Currently foreign broadcasters have to get a licence from the Independent Television Commission, even if they have already been authorised by another member state.

France, Italy, Belgium and Spain are also being accused of potentially breaching the EC law.
